Wheels

Wheels

You asked to hear my story and here it is:
My muse died in the year 1778 at eight o'clock
'Neath the wheels of a wagon on a muddy dark road

I did not hear her scream but I felt her die
I felt her die because my soul sank into despair
And all my hopes fled from me and into ether

All the songs I'd never written, vanished
All the poems I'd never read, all gone and vanquished
All the dreams I'd never dreamed, died of their anguish

When the sun arose, the morning shined the news
And all the grimy townsfolk cried the blues
For there in tattered pieces, lay the muse

And I, in sorrow's cloak, and out of rhyme
Bade my horse go faster still than death
And on we rode through Time with bloodied wheels.

Raining On The Night Train

Raining On The Night Train

It was raining on the night train
As it hustled through the dark
Taking me away from sorrow
Moving closer to your heart

For so long, I’d lived without you
Missed the sweetness of your smile
Till I thought I’d just go crazy
Unless I spent a little while

In those arms so tightly muscled
In those eyes that drew me in
In those hands that felt like velvet
Saintly, with a touch of sin

I couldn’t stand it any longer
Called your number, found you home
Heard that voice so full of hunger
Say “Baby Girl, I’m all alone”

So I hurried, caught the last train
Watched the rain the whole night through
Wondering what I’d say at long last
When I laid my eyes on you

I Never Lost You

              I Never Lost You

I never lost you
In the sea or sand
In the sky as clouds rolled by
Letting go my hand.

I never lost you
In the dusk or dawn
In the dark or daydream
Noticing you'd gone.

 never lost you
In a crowded place
In a dim lit restaurant
With shadows on your face.

I never lost you
On a moonlight swim
Watching waves take you away
Held prisoner at their whim.

I never lost you
On a busy street
Walking fast ahead of me
With others yet to meet.

I never lost you
In the shining snow
Clutching love tight to my heart
Not wanting to let go.

I never lost you
In sheets of dreamless sleep
Watching your back turned from me
With no love left to keep.

I never lost you
Your dark eyes gave no sign
And though your body sleeps by me still,
You were never mine.

Wounded Paradise

Wounded Paradise

Drunk on love,
Can hardly walk
With my eyes full of the sun.....
Stumbling down this hard dirt road
Like an outlaw on the run.

I didn't see it coming
I didn't know it's name
I didn't see what's left of me
Would never be the same.

Hard to know
When love is real
And when it's just real bad....
So worldly when it comes to that
So worldly, but so sad.

Her face was full of danger
Her lips were wet with dew
Her dark eyes told me silently
"I've been waiting here for you."

And so I fell into her arms
Her wounded Paradise.....
Drank until I'd had my fill
Of the sweetness of her lies.

Like an madness in the midnight
Like a dream about to end
Like a dying bird that's dropping
In a sea of drowning men.

She loved me
And she healed me
With a love I've never touched.....
Then she kissed me and she killed me
With a death I loved so much.

She's an angel and a devil
She's a heart about to break
She's a cool, cool drink of water
To a man with thirst to slake.

But when morning came,
She said to me
As the sun rose in the sky......
"You cannot stay, be on your way."
And she didn't say goodbye.

My heart filled with rejection
My eyes, with unshed tears
Once more a little boy unloved
Like I'd been for countless years.

I tipped my hat,
Walked out her door
Staggered by it all......
Walking, turning, hoping, hoping
But I never heard her call.

Attics Of The Rich

Attics of The Rich

(a nonsense must read blog posted on
 November 32nd)

Cricket bats at the ready, boys!
We gotta clean out the attics of the rich
And decipher kryptonite particles
Written in the tea leaves of Cypress
Before it is too late.

Go on now, go on!
Ain't no sense being stubborn
Mules got souls, too, I know that
But you turkeys
Gonna end up on somebody's plate come Thursday.

I got me a cannon
On the top of that hill
I'm gonna light it up and fire it
At Jupiter one of these hot damn days
You just watch me out of your blind eyes!

Weasels! Weasels! Everywhere!
Just look at 'em! Wearing lil ole heels
And mink coats and mini dresses
Made out of mp3 players
And fine copper wires.

I says to my buddy the other day
I says: Hambone, where you think we goin'?
And he says: I don't know 'bout you, Plumber
But I'm goin' to sleep!
And I says: Well, bring me back a souvenir.

Rose, my baby Rose, (you know the one)
She smile all the time and it make me suspicious
She even smile when she cryin'!
I bought her a turquoise Thunderbird to drive herself crazy in
But she put it in a blender and made one of them smoothies.

Did ya'll see that news story the other day?
'Bout the end of the 5th dimension
And the ramifications of the non-totalitarian be-bop society
And the effects of Popsicle dreams on a left handed
Son of a moonshine maker in Rockport, Cali-sumthin-er-nuther?

It gonna be the death of us all
The death of us all, I tells ya!
That and peanut butter left out in the sun
And shooting stars lying all over the ground
For kids to trip over and make airplanes out of.

But back to the attics of the rich
That's my call in life
I know that now. Me and my baby, Rose
Gonna clean out all them attics with cricket bats
And settle down in Whynot, Mississippi and sell gorilla cookies.

Uh huh. Sho 'nuff, we are. You just watch!
Gonna sell us enough gorilla cookies
To get our own attic.

Birds In Cages

Birds In Cages

Like birds in cages, poets, we
Feel the constriction
Feel the confined allocation
Feel the terror of the bars
Be they gilded or gold.

Like birds in cages, poets, we
The thought writers
The thought readers
The thought muses
Write until we can write no more.

Like birds in cages,  poets, we
The loving but skillfully living unloved
Souls, divided yet fuller than most
Compose our sonnets, find our voices
And in our cages, from broken hearts, we sing.

A Dozen Rubies

A Dozen Rubies

A dozen rubies fell to my feet
Scattered by your hand
You'd come to ask me for my love
And proclaim yours for me and
A thousand diamonds promised me
When promise I had made
While the topaz sun high in the sky
Burned us in the shade.

The grass an emerald shade of green
Lay below your feet and mine
From crystal cup we two did sup
The aged garnet wine
Grapes in clustered amethyst
You fed me from your fingers
And kissed the residue away
While afternoon did linger.

With silver tongue you spoke the words
My sweet heart to seduce
Like opals changing in the light
The outcome to deduce
Your turquoise eyes lit up with joy
Every time I smiled
I teased you with my pearl white hands
And we waltzed a little while.

The blue sky turned to jasper
Then agate, then sapphire
We lay and watched the end of day
As the sunset turned to fire
The dozen rubies crushed beneath
My onyx colored hair
Then I saw the black lies in your eyes
Carefully hidden there.

You did not know that I could see
The truth there in the man
(No precious jewel can buy my heart
From yours or any hand)
In twilight's hue I turned to you
At the sun's last golden glow
Your jaded eyes full of surprise
As I softly told you....... no.

The River Made Of Dreams

 The River Made of Dreams

Tonight, my love, I'll be off again
Like I've been wont to do
Rowing down that river of dreams
Searching still for you.

Listening for your heartbeat
The call I hope to hear
Feeling my heart beating fast
When it feels you are near.

Your smile is like my morning sun
Your eyes, my stars at night
Your love is like the moon above
Reflecting Heaven's light.

I follow the compass in my soul
That I know will lead me to
The only love I've ever known
That's ever proven true.

I miss you like a summer's breeze,
Rain on a desert floor
We only had a taste so brief
Of love but I need more.

My love, why did you have to go
Leave me alone and thus
Searching every waterway
On a shore that's turned to dust?

I know you did not mean to leave
It was against your will
Your sad eyes swore your bond to me
And we are bonded still.

The waters took you away from me
In the currents wild and wide
And I followed till I lost sight of you
And there I died inside.

I promised that I would find you again
No matter how hard it seems
And tonight I'll row my boat once more
Down that river made of dreams.
